Drought, bushfires and floods have always impacted Australia’s population, biodiversity and landscape. However, the bushfires recorded in recent months have been unprecedented, with more than 10 million hectares burned since the fires began.

The Australia Academy of Science says they are the largest to affect any of the megadiverse countries—larger than the 2019 Amazon and 2019 Californian fires, and Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology reports 2019 as the nation’s warmest year on record.
